As we had mentioned in the last post, women end up using only 1/3 of their wardrobe. Which, if you come to think of it, adds up to a lot of wasted money, time and emotions.

Gearing yourself up towards better wardrobe utilization requires you to properly arrange your stuff in the wardrobe. This could mean some real work, which we promise will have great payoffs in the future. Here we will provide you with a basic schema of how to give your wardrobe a new life.

Step 1: First of all, set aside a day for yourself. This is important. Rushing will not help. Since we know everyone takes their looks and style seriously, it has backed up by some real groundwork too.

Step 2: Connect your Ipod or mp3 player to your speaker system and put on your favorite playlist. Music could make this exercise more fun.

Step 3: Now get yourself some bins or cartons. In this you could pack up the stuff that you haven’t worn for a long time and don’t intend to either. This you can gift to your younger siblings or to a charity even.

Step 4: Now for some real work. Take out all your clothes and put all of them on your bed. Now you could divide the work based on seasons or occasions; like summer, winter, partywear, casuals, etc.

Step 5: First ground rule: If there are some clothes that you have outgrown, then do not keep them. Unless of course, you have an emotional attachment to them. If however this simple tip has motivated you to become leaner and meaner; then you can reward yourself with newer clothes.

Step 6: Now you need to assess all of your clothes on a scale of 1 to 10; 10 being you love to wear them. 4-6 means you are a little not-so –sure about them and below 3 the ones that you aren’t going to wear ever. Surely, 3 and below 3 should immediately be put into the gift boxes. While 4-6 should go on a re-assessment mode; meaning you’ll pack them up and come back to them 3 months hence.

Step 7: Now the 7-10 should go back to your closet. However, we advise you to make a list of things that could be bought to wear with any given combo to give a beautiful-er look. So if you have a pair of pink denims with a red polka dot top, you could note down to get a hairband that goes with that combo. And so on and so forth.

Step 8: Make a list of  things you need to pick up, next time your are out shopping, save it on your cell phone (Use an app like evernote)

Step 9: Feel relieved. Feel great. Feel awesome.

By the end of this wardrobe makeover, you will:

  • Find out clothes that you forgot you had
  • Create more space in your wardrobe for newer clothes
  • Sort out your clothes in an easy and organized manner, which will make you hit the road in quick time
  • Get rid of the clothes that you’d never try on again
  • Have clothes that you enjoy wearing and those look great on you

You’d have to remember that you are only settling for the very best that your wardrobe had. If there are any unsure feelings about certain clothes, you could try them on, once or twice. See if they still make you feel great. If they do, you could give them a second chance. But if you don’t, then forget about them.

Also, this exercise could make you feel guilty about the clothes you are getting rid of. But remember, that when you gift them to your siblings or friends or even charity, you are making someone else happy and so should you.

Many of the times, you’d find certain unwanted clothes that still look brand new and they could really fund your next shopping excursion. Sell them on ebay or you could use a dress agency which will charge you a certain percentage.

If at the end of this, you feel tired, then gift yourself a really nice pedicure-manicure session or a spa or a treat at your favorite restaurant. You deserve it, just like your wardrobe deserved it.
